Happiness is a Choice
So many times in life we make our own happiness conditional. Something has to happen or we have to get some material thing we’ve been coveting before we give ourselves permission to be happy. “If I could just get a boyfriend/girlfriend, THEN I’ll be happy.” “Once I get that promotion I can buy a new car and can finally be happy.”
While these things may be a short term source of happiness, the feeling will eventually fade and you will be searching for the next thing to make you happy. You can not depend on other people or material things to make you happy. If you put the responsibility of your happiness in the hands of others, you will inevitably be disappointed when they do something that makes you unhappy.
You have the power within you to make yourself happy. Being dependent on material things and other people to make you happy is giving that power away. It is a conscious choice to be happy, and you can do it right now. Look in the mirror and smile at yourself, because you no longer have to wait for the ever elusive happiness you have been seeking. Simply give yourself permission to be happy, without any conditions or prerequisites.
