As human beings we are alike in many ways. Yet for all of our similarities, no two people are exactly the same. Even identical twins end up with different life experiences, either by twists of fate or because of their own choices. It is because of these differences that a “one size fits all” solution will rarely be the most optimal answer to our problems.
One of the main tenets of my personal philosophy that I have developed over the past five years is to find what works for me best, and forget the rest. Just because something worked great for someone else, doesn’t necessarily mean that it will work well for me. I have found that I am most successful when I adapt any new method or strategy I learn to my own personal situation.
A perfect example of why it’s best to find what works for you is when it comes to trying to pick a diet and exercise plan. There are a massive amount of diet plans and exercise programs out there to choose from, and it can be quite overwhelming. With diet plans you have to consider food allergies, ease of preparing the foods you are gonna eat, how portable the food is if you are away from home most of the time, and many other factors. With exercise programs you have to consider your starting level of fitness, any health issues that might affect your ability to do the program, and whether you actually enjoy the exercises enough to stick with it. Jogging is a cornerstone in many people’s exercise regimens, but it is probably my least favorite form of exercise of all time. By finding more suitable and enjoyable alternatives that give me the same kind of results (or better), it is easier to stick with my exercise program.
You know yourself better than anyone, so don’t be afraid to experiment with different solutions to whatever you are trying to achieve. Don’t just use something because it is “the best”, or because it worked great for someone else. Find what works best for you, and forget the rest.
