5 Tips to Help You Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

A new year is upon us, a clean slate that is full of opportunity and hope for a brighter future. It is a chance to reflect on what happened in the past year. An opportunity to review the goals you were able to accomplish, and what you still need to work on. A new year is when most people set new goals for themselves, more commonly known as new year’s resolutions.

Your resolution may be something small but still important to you, such as losing that last five pounds. Or, it could be something so big that it could completely change your life, such as moving hundreds or even thousands of miles away from your current home, starting a new career in a different field, or finding the man or woman of your dreams.

Whatever your resolution may be, the unfortunate fact of the matter is that most people give up on their resolutions. Using the following five tips will set you apart from the largely unsuccessful majority by helping you to keep your new year’s resolutions.

1. Write Your New Year’s Resolutions Down

The simplest and quickest way to increase your chances of being successful in keeping your resolutions is to write them down. Doing this is essential because it makes your resolution more real and concrete, as opposed to just an idea floating around in your head. Make your resolution as specific and well-defined as possible, so you can focus on it easier. This beneficial action takes very little time to do, but is often skipped by many people because they do not think it is necessary.

2. Plan Your Work and Work Your Plan

To get to where you want to be, you have to figure out how you are going to get there. Research different methods and strategies pertaining to your resolution until you have a good idea of the best way to accomplish your goals.

3. Keep Track of Your Progress

As you work toward accomplishing your resolution(s), it is important to track your progress regularly. By doing so you will be able to see how far along you are and what adjustments you might need to make.

4. Avoid All Forms of Negativity as Much as Possible

An excellent tip for your whole life, but even more so when trying to better yourself. Avoid as many sources of negativity as you can. Whether it is other people telling you why you shouldn’t bother with your “silly” resolutions, or negative music, movies, and television shows. Any entertainment or other perceived benefit you may receive from these people or things is greatly outweighed by the damaging effects the negativity can have on your motivation and resolve.

5. Surround Yourself with Positive Influences

Even more valuable than avoiding negative influences, surrounding yourself with positivity can have an immense impact on your success. People that are supportive of you trying to better yourself are priceless, you should spend most (or all) of your social time with them. Enjoying music, movies, and other forms of media that inspire you is especially helpful for when you feel your motivation or determination start to wane.

You Can Do It!

By following these tips you should experience a much greater degree of success in keeping your new year’s resolutions, plus any other goals you may set in the future. May you have a very happy and prosperous 2010 and beyond!
