How Important Is Momentum When Trying To Be Successful In Life?

Momentum is often talked about in sports. Athletes, and even whole teams, that are able to build up a lot of momentum become very difficult to defeat. Whether this is for purely psychological reasons, a metaphysical reason, or something else entirely, the fact remains that it is an easily observable phenomenon. The good news is that the concept of momentum can be applied to many other things in life, including you becoming more successful.

Are You At Rest, Or Are You In Motion?

To paraphrase the Law of Inertia (also known as Newton’s First Law of Motion), an object at rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion, unless acted upon by an outside force. If you are not as successful as you would like to be, then that means that you are not taking the required actions needed to succeed. If you do not know which actions are required to be successful in your chosen endeavor, then that should be your first step.

If you do know what needs to be done but just aren’t doing it, then you need to begin taking massive and consistent action. It will be hard at first because of the effects of inertia, and you will very likely not see results for quite some time. As humans our bodies and minds are resistant to change; to see results you must stay dedicated even in the face of adversity and a lack of success. You have to focus on consistently taking action to build up your personal momentum to go from a rest state (unsuccessful) to a state of in motion (successful).

Reaching Critical Mass

The goal you are trying to reach by consistently taking the necessary actions for success is to build up enough momentum to reach a critical mass. This is a positive feedback loop where you experience good results and success, which will motivate you to keep doing the important things that brought you this success. Actions that you may have found hard or tedious before, become easier and sometimes almost effortless. The important thing to remember is that you have to be persistent and consistent with your actions long enough to reach the aforementioned critical mass. Many people give up too soon because they don’t see the results they want fast enough. Patience and persistence are two of the toughest traits to cultivate, but are immensely important when you are seeking success.
