The Importance of Persistence

Persistence is often the one key ingredient that is missing when someone tries to achieve a goal. Even more so now in today’s world, where instant gratification is not just desired, but expected.

When results do not come as quickly and easily as expected, many people become discouraged and give up. Worst of all, some quit even though they are much closer to achieving their goal than they think.

Many times all that is needed is just a few small adjustments to what you are already doing. Other times you simply need to keep doing what you’ve been doing for just a little bit longer, and then you will finally break through and make real progress.

Never Give Up

One of my favorite examples of persistence is the character of Scrat, from the Ice Age movies. The one thing he wants more than anything else in the world is an acorn, and he pursues it relentlessly. Every time he thinks he finally has the acorn, it slips from his grasp once again. He has every reason to give up and quit chasing the acorn, yet he perseveres.

Through all of this he never gives up; he truly is the embodiment of persistence. If you have big dreams and goals, you have to want them as bad as Scrat wants that acorn if you want to succeed.

Nothing in the World Can Take the Place of Persistence

I will leave you with my favorite quote regarding persistence:

“Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”
